Submissions

If you are interested in being published with us, submit your pitch and/or writing samples to editors[at]strangematters[dot]coop.

Please start the subject of your email with “Submission.”

Pitches should be no more than a few paragraphs describing your proposal showing what the piece will cover, its style, how long it will be, etc. Samples can take the form of links to your previously published writing or, if you’re a new writer, small samples of works in progress.

We are looking for pieces on political economy, movement strategy, social and intellectual history, criticism of all sorts (cultural, social, literary; of museum art, of novels, of video games, of films, etc), reportage domestic or international, memoir, short fiction, poetry, and much more. Our output so far has ranged from reviews, to profiles, to personal essays, to poems, to international correspondence, to longform historical and philosophical essays. If you’re unsure whether we’d be interested, err on the side of pitching your work. Make sure to read some of our previously published work to get a sense of what we’re looking for!

We anticipate that most of our online pieces will be roughly 2,000 words long. Our print pieces will be lengthier, between 3,000 and 10,000 words. The Futon of each print issue is reserved for pieces of fewer than 1,000 words and is a great opportunity for newcomers to get their first byline, or for the experiments of seasoned writers.

All published pieces are paid at a competitive rate. For more info on our rates, see our FAQ page. We are happy to work with first-time writers and experienced professionals alike. ~
